This talk is an exploration of a potential Roman presence in the Allen Valleys and in particular examines old and new theories behind possible direct routes between the Roman town at Corbridge and the Roman fort at Epiacum near Alston.

Historical documents offer conflicting opinions regarding Roman sites, but Romano-British sites are relatively common. Two potential Roman routes cross the area. Using evidence from both old documentary sources and two recent Lidar studies one can attempt to reconcile contradictory opinions and create a more coherent view of this hidden facet of Allendale’s history.
