Life on the Home Front on Alston Moor was not as dull as one might think. Munitions were produced here that helped to win the Battle of El Alamein, escaped German prisoners of war were caught here, the area was unique in have a mounted Home Guard which made the national headlines, and of course the district made its sacrifices in the lives of servicemen; thankfully no servicewomen were killed. Alston Moor Historical Society is honoured to care for the medals of one young hero who was killed in the Battle of Britain.

From information available in the Society’s archives, these are some of the stories that Alastair will tell tonight.
