For centuries, the focus of farming in much of Cumbria has been on livestock rearing. This talk takes a long view, from the earliest evidence for farming in the Middle Ages to the evidence of farmers' probate inventories from the period 1550-1750. It will introduce distinctive features of early farming in northern England, such as vaccaries and shielings.
